When I finally walked away from my job, I went to Shichahai's Fire God Temple (Huoshen Miao) to volunteer — a personal story of finding a little peace, and some meaning, in a place I never expected.
Set on the banks of the scenic Shichahai lakes, the temple was first raised so emperors could pray for protection from fire. Now it draws mostly young people come for guidance on career, money, love, and health — and the gap between its imperial bones and its anxious new flock is hard to ignore.
The Volunteer Process
Registration opens at 9am. After signing in, Master Wei, a Daoist priest, trains the newcomers. His rule is plain: watch more, listen more, think more, speak less. Simpler than it sounds, and deeper than I gave it credit for.
Once trained, the tasks come. A volunteer's day breaks down like this:
Cleaning the incense burners — the big bronze cauldrons in the courtyard need their ash and spent sticks cleared often. The work is physical, and oddly calming.
Striking the qing — when worshippers come to pray, you sound the qing, a Buddhist percussion instrument, to mark their devotion. Its clear ring hangs in the air and makes the whole courtyard feel sacred.
Guiding the fortune-stick draw (qian) — when visitors shake out a stick, you help read its poem. The temple's verses turn out surprisingly sharp and lyrical.
Stories from the Temple
Volunteering, I met plenty of people hunting for answers. One girl stood a long while before the deity before whispering, "Who am I?" — a question that stayed with me. Regulars told me the temple's guidance rang true, and that they returned whenever a big decision loomed.
An old man came every week for his daughter's health. A couple asked a blessing on their marriage. A fresh graduate wanted a nudge on career. Each arrived carrying a private story, their own hopes and fears.
Volunteer Requirements
Volunteers are 18 to 50. You attend the Thursday training. Dress modestly — no shorts, nothing revealing. Respect the rites and the other visitors. And no photos inside the main halls.

Volunteering here taught me that when you're lost, the wisest move is sometimes to stop, sit still, and listen. The answers tend to arrive the moment you stop clawing after them.
