The Karakoram Highway (G314) is one of the world's most spectacular roads, stretching 435 kilometers from Kashgar to the Khunjerab Pass on the Pakistan border. This self-drive guide covers every stop along this legendary highway.
The route follows the ancient Silk Road through some of the most dramatic mountain scenery on Earth. From the arid Kashgar basin, the road climbs steadily through valleys and over passes, with the Pamir Mountains rising on all sides.
Route: Kashgar to Khunjerab Pass
Starting from Kashgar, the highway heads south through increasingly dramatic terrain. Each stop offers unique landscapes - from yardang landforms to glacial lakes reflecting 7,000-meter peaks.
Red Mountain Valley
A free stop along the highway featuring unique yardang landform - wind-carved reddish hills that look like a Martian landscape. Great for photos, especially in the golden hour light. No entrance fee.
White Sand Lake
A stunning lake with impossibly blue water set against white sand dunes and snow-capped mountains. The contrast between the white sand, blue water, and green mountains is surreal. Entrance fee: 40 yuan.
Karakul Lake
At an altitude of 3,600m, Karakul Lake reflects three peaks over 7,000 meters: Muztagh Ata (7,546m), Kongur Tagh (7,719m), and Kongur Tiube (7,595m). The sight of these massive peaks mirrored in the still lake water is unforgettable. Entrance fee: 45 yuan. You can stay in Kyrgyz yurts by the lake.
Muztagh Glacier Park
Get up close to the "Father of Ice Mountains" - Muztagh Ata. The glacier park offers walking trails and viewing platforms. The ice formations and crevasses are spectacular. Entrance fee: 66 yuan.
Tashkurgan
A border town where China touches Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan. The Stone City ruins overlook the Tashkurgan River valley. The town has a unique mix of Tajik and Chinese cultures. Try the local Tajik cuisine and visit the ancient fort. Good place to stay overnight before continuing to the pass.
Wakhan Corridor
This narrow strip of land was once part of the ancient Silk Road. The valley stretches westward toward Afghanistan, with dramatic mountain walls on both sides. The scenery is raw and untouched.
Khunjerab Pass
At 4,700 meters elevation, this is the highest paved border crossing in the world. The pass marks the China-Pakistan border, marked by a grand gate. Even in summer, the wind here is fierce and temperatures can drop below freezing. Entrance fee: 40 yuan. The air is thin - walk slowly.
Travel Tips
Border Permit: You need a border defense permit to travel beyond Tashkurgan. Apply at the Kashgar Public Security Bureau or through your hotel. Bring your passport.
Altitude Sickness: The highway reaches above 4,000m. Acclimatize in Kashgar (1,300m) before driving up. Bring oxygen canisters and altitude sickness medication.
Clothing: Even in summer, temperatures at high altitude can drop to near freezing. Bring warm layers, windproof jacket, and gloves.
Vehicle: A regular car can handle the paved highway, but an SUV is recommended for comfort and safety. Fill up in Kashgar - gas stations are sparse along the route.
Best Time: May to October. The pass may be closed in winter due to snow.
