Kashgar - the most important city in southern Xinjiang and a legendary stop on the ancient Silk Road. For over two thousand years, merchants, monks, and explorers have passed through this oasis city, leaving layers of culture and history.
Kashgar Old City
The Old City is divided into East and West sections, connected by maze-like streets filled with colorful carved windows, traditional Uyghur homes, and bustling bazaars. Walking through the narrow alleys feels like stepping back in time. Every corner reveals something new - a child playing, a grandmother baking naan, a craftsman shaping copper.
The streets are organized by trade - one street for pottery, another for musical instruments, another for hats. The architecture is distinctly Uyghur, with ornate wooden doors, lattice windows, and rooftop terraces.
Gaotai Residential Houses
This is the largest existing raw earth building complex in China. Built on a high loess platform, the homes are constructed entirely from mud and wood, stacked and connected by narrow passages and steep stairs. Traditional pottery and wood-burning craft workshops still operate here, preserving techniques passed down for generations.
Kashgar Museum
The museum displays thousands of years of history from prehistoric times through the Islamic period. Artifacts include Silk Road treasures, ancient manuscripts, and exhibits on the diverse cultures that have called this region home.
7-Day Itinerary
Day 1-3: Kashgar Old City
Wander the maze-like streets of the Old City. Visit the Id Kah Mosque, the largest mosque in China. Explore the Grand Bazaar, where you can buy everything from carpets to spices. Watch the traditional dance performances in the square.

Drive the Karakoram Highway to Tashkurgan. Stop at White Sand Lake, Karakul Lake, and the Muztagh Glacier Park. Stay overnight in Tashkurgan.
Day 7: Return to Kashgar
Drive back to Kashgar. Final shopping at the bazaar and farewell dinner.
Travel Tips
Transportation: Use Didi (Chinese ride-hailing) for getting around the city. For the Karakoram Highway, rent a car or join a tour group.
Border Permit: Required for travel beyond Tashkurgan on the Karakoram Highway. Apply at the Kashgar Public Security Bureau.
Accommodation: Stay in a traditional Uyghur homestay in the Old City for an authentic experience. Many have been renovated with modern amenities while preserving traditional architecture.
Best Time to Visit: May to October. Summers are hot but the Old City provides shade. Avoid winter as many businesses close.
